Sep 21, Kotzebue - Trestin Tate, 19, of Kotzebue, was fined $1,000, had driver’s license revoked for 9 months, 48 hours community service and place on probation for one year after pleading no contest to a charge of possession, control or consumption by persons under 21.

Mar 3, Kotzebue - 8:06 a.m. Kotzebue AST received a report of an overdue snowmachine from Buckland to Kotzebue. Matthew Hadley, 26, and Fredrick Armstrong, 29, both of Buckland, departed Buckland on March 2 at about 8:15 p.m. on one snowmachine with a half tank of fuel. They ran out of fuel about two miles south of Nimiuk Point, about 20 miles southeast of Kotzebue. Hadley and Armstrong were able to walk to a nearby construction camp and took shelter inside a trailer for the evening. Searchers from Kotzebue search and rescue and Buckland search and rescue were activated, in addition to a Trooper aircraft. At approximately 10:25 a.m. the Trooper aircraft located the snowmachine and both parties. Hadley and Armstrong were located in good condition and were later transported to Kotzebue by the Kotzebue SAR team. The Kotzebue Troopers would like to thank the Kotzebue SAR and Buckland SAR teams for their quick response and efforts.

Feb 26, Kotzebue - Lionel D. Winkel, 27, of Kotzebue, was charged with three felony counts of first-degree vehicle theft, driving under influence and refusal, and three misdemeanor counts of driving while license revoked, reckless driving and reckless endangerment. Matthew Morris John Hadley, 25, was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree domestic violence assault. At 8:35 p.m. an Alaska State Troopers School Resource Officer responded to assist school staff, dealing with an intoxicated individual refusing to leave school property during the Elder’s Invitational Basketball tournament in Noorvik. Investigation revealed that Shellain Rose Adams, 20, of Noorvik was highly intoxicated and verbally challenged school staff. The responding Trooper contacted Shellain, who became combative and attempted to flee the scene on foot. As Shellain was being taken into custody, the Trooper was assaulted by Shellain’s sister, Janice Adams, 18, of Noorvik. The Trooper attempted to also take Janice into custody; however, she was able to break free from the Trooper and fled the scene on foot. Shellain was subsequently arrested for the charge of Disorderly Conduct, Minor Consuming Alcohol, Resisting Arrest, and violating the conditions of her probation. The next day at about 10:30 a.m. Alaska State Troopers contacted Janice at her residence in Noorvik where she was taken into custody without further incident. Janice was charged with assault in the fourth degree, interfering with an arrest and resisting arrest. Both Janice and Shellain were transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail. Janice was held on a $500 bail and Shellain was held on a $1,000 bail. The Trooper sustained minor injuries which did not require medical treatment. Alcohol was a factor during the incident.

Feb 25, Kotzebue - Meda B. Sheldon, 39, of Kotzebue, was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree domestic violence assault. At 10:02 a.m. Buckland VPO Patricia Thomas reported to Kotzebue AST a family member had been assaulted by Matthew Hadley, 25. The victim had left the residence and was examined for minor injuries at the Buckland clinic. When local VPOs attempted to contact Hadley at his residence, Hadley blocked his door from the interior and refused to answer. A subsequent arrest warrant Feb. 26 and Troopers responded from Kotzebue. Entry was made into the Hadley residence and Hadley was arrested without incident. Hadley was transported to Kotzebue Regional Jail and remanded with bail set at $2,500 plus a court approved third-party. Alcohol was a factor during the incident.

Feb 23, Kotzebue - Lona Flora Penn, 32, of Ambler, was charged with two counts of felony third-degree domestic violence assault. Russell Gregory Schaeffer, 26, was sentenced to 120 days in jail after pleading guilty to a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Feb 23, Barrow - Sheldon K. Adams Jr., 32, was sentenced to 30 days in jail with 29 days suspended and placed on probation for one year after pleading guilty to a charge of violating conditions of release.

Feb 22, Kotzebue - At 5:08 p.m. Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue received a report of a domestic violence in the village Ambler. Troopers responded to Ambler and an investigation resulted in the arrest of Lona Flora Penn, 32, of Ambler. Penn was transported to the Kotzebue Regional Jail where she was charged with two counts of assault in the third degree. Alcohol was determined to be a contributing factor during the incident.

Feb 22, Kotzebue - Boris Ipalook, 29, was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended and placed on probation for two years after pleading guilty to a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault. Lydia A. Nashookpuk, was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 90 days suspended, fined $500 and placed on probation for one year after pleading guilty to a charge of fourth-degree domestic violence assault.

Feb 20, Kotzebue - Around 12 p.m. Alaska State Troopers in Kotzebue received a report of an assault in Kiana. It was reported that one family member assaulted another family member. No injuries were reported. The investigation is continuing. At about 6:49 p.m. Alaska State Troopers received a report of an unexpected home death in the village of Noorvik. An investigation revealed that family members of Norman Glenn Carter Sr., 67, of Noorvik, discovered him deceased in his home at about 6:25 p.m. Carter had a history of health problems which are believed to have contributed to his death. The state medical examiner determined the death as natural. No foul play is suspected. Carter’s body was released to next of kin on scene.

Feb 20, Kotzebue - Julia Marie Nashookpuk, 28, of Kotzebue, was charged with two counts of misdemeanor fourth-degree domestic violence assault. Michael J. Kubalack, 19, of Kotzebue, was charged with misdemeanor minor consuming of alcohol.
