Peter Carl Tagarook Jr.

Cynthia Brower and Peter Tagarook Sr., of Nuiqsut, announce the birth of their son, Peter Carl Tagarook Jr. (Aishaanna Paulan Umialligaaq Qazzaqtaaluk), at 8:55 p.m. on April 20, 2008, in Kuparuk. Peter weighed 7 pounds, 1.2 ounces and measured 20 inches. He joins a brother, Kyle Matthew Brower. His grandparents are Carl and Wendy Brower and Cora Tagarook and Jonah Nukapigak.

Tyler Joe Soplu

Felisha Brower and Joseph Soplu, of Kaktovik, announce the birth of their son, Tyler Joe Soplu (Koonneak), at 10:46 p.m. on April 16, 2008, at the Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow. Tyler weighed 6 pounds, 13.2 ounces and measured 19 inches. His grandparents are Fred Tagarook Sr. and Virginia Brower and Wilson and Annie Soplu.

Haley Lydia Oktollik-Nashookpuk

Diantha Oktollik and Henry Nashookpuk, of Point Hope, announce the birth of their daughter, Haley Lydia Oktollik-Nashookpuk, at 5:34 p.m. on April 20, 2008, at the Maniilaq Health Center in Kotzebue. Haley weighed 7 pounds, 5 ounces and measured 19 inches. She joins a brother, Henry Nashookpuk Jr. Her grandmother is Hazel Oktollik, and her great-grandparents are Titus and Lydia Nashookpuk and John and Molly Oktollik.

Carol Nutaaq Ahsogeak Kious, 81

Carol Nutaaq Ahsogeak Kious died on April 21, 2008, at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

Born in Oliktok on Sept. 30, 1926, Kious was a long-time resident of both Barrow and Fairbanks and was raised along the Hula-Hula and Colville Rivers in and around the Arctic Slope.

She was survived by her children: Perry Ahsogeak, Robert and Denise Kious, Carolyn and Glenn Edwards, Donna and Gerald Rexford and Bernice and Isaac Kaigelak. She was predeceased by sons Donald and John Kious and daughter Linda Kious-Okpik.

She is also survived by 37 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Kious was employed as a nurse’s aide in Barrow and Kanakanak, a teacher of Native Arts in Fairbanks and in Barrow, a laborer, and a retired bull-cook in the culinary union and was well-known as an Alaska Native artist.

She was a maker of Eskimo masks, dolls, mukluks, parkas, slippers, baleen items and caribou-moose jawbone sleds.

Kious was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Fairbanks and the Utqiagvik Presbyterian Church in Barrow. She also attended the Born Again Believers in Christ church and the Fairbanks Native Bible Church.

A funeral service took place Thursday, April 24, at the First Presbyterian Church in Fairbanks

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Barrow.

Kious’s family would like to thank Arctic Slope Native Association, Kuukpik Corp., First Presbyterian Church staff, and many others for their time, financial contributions and support.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends, grandchildren, students and the many people who held her dearly. Quyanaqpak to all those who have shown their love and support to her and the family.
