Resuscitation efforts fail to revive Ahkivgak

Herbert Ahkivgak, 80, was pronounced dead at 2:57 a.m. on March 14 at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow after efforts to revive him failed.

Emergency Medical Services had received a report at 2:06 a.m. that Ahkivgak was not breathing. North Slope Borough police officers responded to 1547 Nanook St. and started resuscitation efforts until the North Slope Borough Emergency Medical Services arrived and continued to try to revive him.

Ahkivgak was transported to the hospital where a staff physician pronounced him dead. His family has been notified.

The police department said there was no evidence of foul play and offered its condolences to the Ahkivgak family, friends and the community of Barrow.

The state medical examiner’s office was notified of the death and has released Ahkivgak’s body to his family.
