Huskies drop two to Buckland
The Kotzebue Huskies suffered a tough outing this past weekend, dropping a pair of non-conference contests against the Buckland Sissauni.
Buckland garnered a 70-62 victory in the first game of the two-game series on Friday. They followed that win with a 63-57 decision on Saturday.
Kotzebue, which has opened the season at 0-7, will return to action tonight (Jan. 25) when they face off against Scammon Bay.
Whaler Invitational starts
Basketball action will take center stage this weekend in Barrow as some of the state's top squads take to the floor of the BHS gym to compete in the Whaler Invitational Basketball Tournament. Overall, eight teams — four boys' and four girls' squads — will be participating.
The Barrow Lady Whalers will tip off play at noon today with a first-round showdown against Palmer. They will play Juneau-Douglas and East in their ensuing two games.
BHS boys will also be in action. The Whalers, who have won four of their last six games, will face Juneau today. Barrow defeated Juneau, 59-58, on Jan. 11 in the opening round of the Alaska Prep Shootout in Anchorage.
The Whalers will play East on Friday and Monroe Catholic on Monroe Catholic on Saturday.
SIVU tournament to tip off
Some of the top boys' and girls' basketball teams in the Northwest Arctic Borough will begin play in the annual SIVU Basketball Tournament in Noatak. The tournament will feature four boys' and four girls' teams.
Among the teams scheduled to participate in the tournament are Noatak, Noorvik, Buckland and Wainwright.
The tournament will conclude on Saturday with the boys' and girls' championship games.
Warrior Rumble this weekend
The Anaktuvuk Pass boys' and girls' basketball teams will swing back into action this weekend when they travel to the Kenai Peninsula to compete in the 2018 Conoco Phillips Warrior Rumble in Nikolaevsk. The tournament will run through Saturday.
The Anaktuvuk Pass boys will kick off play today with a first-round matchup with Lumen Christi. The game will begin at 4:15 p.m. The AP girls will face Lumen Christi beginning at 2:45 p.m. Joining Anaktuvuk Pass and Lumen Christi in the field will be squads from Nikolaevsk and Nenana.
During their stay, the AP teams will be housed in Homer.
