The Barrow High School Whalers' basketball team hasn't found itself in its current situation in more than a few years. Mainly because they're more accustomed to handing out losses than they are at taking them.

Barrow opened its 2017-18 season this past weekend with a stunning 0-3 performance at the ninth-annual Doc Larson Roundball Classic, which was held Dec. 21 to 23 at Wasilla High School. In all, eight teams, including squads from Georgia and the state of Washington, participated in the tournament.

Barrow opened the tournament with a tough 76-48 loss to the Stephenson Jaguars, a perennial state power in Georgia.

With the loss to Stephenson, the Whalers slipped into a consolation round showdown with Thunder Mountain. A late run by Thunder Mountain doomed Barrow to a nail-biting 70-68 setback, and dropped the team into a third-round matchup with East Anchorage on Dec. 23.

East edged past Barrow in the final game by a 76-68 margin.

The Whalers, who were led by point guards Travis Adams and Sione Tuifua, will return to action on Jan. 4, when they tip off play in the Monroe Catholic tournament. Barrow is scheduled to face off with Seward in its tournament opener.
