The Barrow Lady Whalers and Kotzebue Lady Huskies will take the first step toward what they hope will be a journey to the Class 3A state volleyball championship today. Both teams are scheduled to begin play in the state tournament, which is being held through Saturday at West High School in Anchorage.

The defending Western Conference champion, Barrow drew a tough opponent in its opener. The Lady Whalers will face off against defending state champion Mt. Edgecumbe beginning at 11:45 a.m. Barrow heads into the tournament sporting an 18-1 record.

Mt. Edgecumbe, the Southeast Conference champion, has won the Class 3A state champion in four of the past six years, including in 2016 when they knocked off Nikiski in the finals.

Kotzebue will face Grace Christian in its first-round matchup. The Lady Huskies roll into their second straight appearance in the state tournament with a 16-10 record.

Grace Christian advances as the Southcentral Conference champion. The Lady Grizzlies, who has entered the Southcentral Conference tournament as the No. 3 seed, upset Nikiski in the conference championship game on Saturday.

Kotzebue and Grace Christian will swing into action at 3:15 p.m.

Other first-round bouts include Hutchison facing off with Sitka at 1:20 p.m., while Valdez and Niksiki play at 10 a.m.
