Vernon L. Bennett, 32, of Nuiqsut, pleaded guilty to the class B misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct and reached a plea agreement. He has been ordered to pay a fine of $300 due by the end of the year. He must also pay a police training surcharge of $50 by order of Judicial Officer Angela M. Greene, effective Oct. 11.

Floyd Harvey Sovalik II, 28, of Utqiaġvik, pleaded guilty to the domestic violence class B felony charge of assault in the second degree for causing repeated serious injury and reached a plea agreement through which the charge against him was reduced to the domestic violence class A misdemeanor of assault in the fourth degree for causing reckless injury, of which he was ultimately found guilty. Two additional charges against him were dropped through the plea agreement, as well. He was sentenced to 365 days in jail with 347 days suspended. He has been ordered to pay restitution, the amount of which has yet to be determined. He must also pay a police training surcharge of $50 and an initial jail surcharge of $50. He has been ordered to contact North Slope Borough Behavioral Health within a week of being released from custody for a mental health assessment and complete a screening, evaluation, and recommended program, and file proof of compliance with the court by Oct. 16, 2019. Sovalik has been placed on probation for three years during which time he may not use or possess any deadly weapon. He must also follow all orders regarding contact with the victim in the case by order of Magistrate Judge David Roghair, effective Oct. 16.
