Whalers to face Nikiski in state semifinals
The Barrow High School Whalers did exactly what they wanted on Saturday in Valdez. They tuned up for the most important game of the season with a 59-7 romp over the winless Buccaneers.
Now 5-2 for the season, the victory over Valdez gave Barrow the Aurora Conference championship and, more importantly, guaranteed themselves a home playoff game on the Smurf Turf at Cathy Parker Field. By claiming the top seed in the conference, Barrow will host Nikiski this weekend in the Division III state semifinals.
Nikiski, 4-4 overall, finished second in the Peninsula Conference standings. The Bulldogs clinched their playoff berth on Saturday with a win over Seward.
The winner of the Barrow-Nikiski matchup will advance to the state championship game on Oct. 14 to face either Homer or Eielson. Homer, the Peninsula Conference champion, and Eielson are scheduled to play at 1 p.m. in Homer.
