Huskies sprint to 2nd at Nome Classic

Michael Hensley turned in a season-best performance on Saturday and helped power the Kotzebue Huskies to second in the overall team standings at the 2017 Nome Classic Invitational. The Huskies, sparked by having four runners in the top 10, rolled up 35 points in the 5-kilometer race and finished just 13 points behind Nome in the standings.

Hensley highlighted Kotzebue's outing. The sophomore covered the course in a time of 20 minutes and 14 seconds and finished fifth overall.

Peter Nelson, Samual Lazarus and Kaiden Conwell also did well in the race. Nelson sprinted his way to sixth with a time of 20:20. Lazarus and Conwell placed seventh and ninth, respectively, with marks of 20:24 and 20:56.

Conwell's mark was his personal best in a 3.1-mile race.

Billy Nelson narrowly missed giving the Huskies five top-10 finishers. He crossed the finish line in 11th place with a season-best time of 21:13. His time was just 2 seconds behind the 10th-place runner, Joseph Noongwook of Savoonga.

Sophomore Harley Rider and freshman Frank Sheldon also competed in the race. Rider took 12th overall with a time of 21:19. Sheldon was 13th at 21:31.

Kayla Booth, Emily Hoke and Courtney Nick all turned in season-best times in the girls' division. Booth posted a mark of 26:26 en route to finishing fifth in the girls' race. Hoke placed eighth with a run of 27:25, while Nick finished 16th at 28:46.
