Wolgemuth leads Lady Walers to 5th in Palmer

Sara Wolgemuth knew going into Saturday's Palmer Invitational cross country meet, the Lady Whalers needed a big-time performance from one of its runners to help a young team find its way. She delivered exactly what the team needed.

Wolgemuth powered Barrow to a fifth-place finish in the Division II standings by legging out a top 25 finish in one of the state's larger meets. More than 25 teams and 800 runners competed in the 5-kilometer race.

Wolgemuth led a list of five Barrow runners to compete the race in the top 50. She covered the 3.1-mile course in a time of 23 minutes and 25.02 seconds and finished 24th overall.

Alexia Bankston also turned in a stellar performance for the Lady Whalers. She finished 34th with a time of 25:01.09.

Kaylie Nelson, Rachel Solomon and Lewanne Mongoyak-Brower rounded out the team's top five runners. Nelson finished 46th with a time of 25:47.31, while Solomon was 47th at 26:01.11. Mongoyak-Brower was 48th at 26:22.41.

Chloe Mongoyak-Brower also did well. She finished 49th at 26:23.37.

Nunamuit had three runners compete in the race, including Claire Fry, who raced to a 25th-place finish. Her time was 23:41.79.

Teammates Monique Ekak and Abigail Fry finished 69th and 73rd, respectively, with times of 20:48.64 and 20:56.22.

Alak's Jenysa Ahmagoak also participated in the race. She was 37th at 25:12.33.
