The Shungnak community started the year off with a bang by celebrating the opening of the 2017 year with a community engagement get-together to welcome everyone into the new year. Shungnak ended the 2016 year with a New Year's Eve Bash that was hosted by several different businesses from the community which included: Jena Commack and Bertha Commack from Maniilaq, Shungnak school's Youth Leaders, Shungnak IRA and NANA, also with contributions from some Elders.

The community came together to put on family fun entertainment for the whole community. Kids of all ages enjoyed the upbeat laughter and games as the adults cheered and clapped on beat during every competition. The adults joined in on the fun as well when it was their turn to shine.

The message was clear with the expectation of moving our village forward by partaking in positive activities, more family involvement, and the continued message that education comes first and working together daily. The camaraderie of It's a "WE" was spread throughout the entire event culminating at the bonfire held lakeside to bring in the new year.

Roger Franklin is the Shungnak School principal.
