One man is dead and a woman is injured following a shooting early Saturday morning in Barrow.

According to North Slope Borough Police, the department received a report of gunshots near the 1200 block of Agvik Street at about 2:46 a.m. on Sept. 10.

Following an investigation, police found that the adult man had shot the adult woman from a residence on the 1800 block.

"The female fled to a different residence and was allowed into the residence," police wrote in a release. "The suspect followed her and fired one round into the residence. Someone from within the house returned two shots at the suspect."

After the shootout, the man left the residence and went to the 1500 block where he was later found deceased. He appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

Next of kin have been notified.

The woman who was shot was receiving medical treatment for her injuries earlier this week, locals said.

Though the identities of the man and the woman, who did know each other, had not yet been officially released by police by deadline Tuesday, family members and friends of both have come together on social media and VHF to mourn. The man is survived by his young children.
