Eric Olson, chairman of the North Pacific Fishery Management Council, along with John Henderschedt, of Washington state, a council member since 2008, have been reappointed to their seats on the council, the Commerce Department announced June 2.

Olson, who was born and raised in rural Alaska, is the director of offshore fisheries for the Yukon Delta Fisheries Development Association. A veteran commercial fishermen, he is also a shareholder of the Bristol Bay Native Corp.

Henderschedt, a veteran of 25 years in the Alaska fishing industry, joined the Fisheries Leadership and Sustainability Forum in February as its first executive director.

The Fisheries Forum is a partnership among four of the nation's leading academic and policy institutions: Stanford's Woods Institute for the Environment, Duke University's Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions, the Center or Ocean Solutions, and the Environmental Defense Fund.

The North Pacific Fishery management Council is one of eight regional fishery councils established under the Magnuson Fishery Conservation and Management Act in 1976 and later renamed the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act. The council oversees management of over 900,000 square miles of the excusive economic zone off Alaska, with responsibility for groundfish management in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea and Aleutian Islands, including cod, Pollock, flatfish, mackerel, sablefish and rockfish species harvested mainly by trawlers, hook and line longliners and pot fishermen.

The council also makes allocative and limited entry decisions for halibut, through its representatives on the International Pacific Halibut Commission, a joint effort of the United States and Canada in sharing the responsibility for conservation of halibut. Other large Alaska fisheries such as salmon, crab and herring are managed primarily by the state of Alaska.
